ICZ donates US$20 for Covid-19
The Insurance Council of Zimbabwe has donated US$20 000 which was earmarked for Covid-19 awareness and vaccination programmes for secondary schools at the time it was sought for, but will now be channelled towards to other areas of need in consultation with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
The money was handed over on Wednesday to the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works which houses the Department of Civil Protection which is in charge of disasters across the country, in Harare.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Public Works Hon Marian Chombo said given that Covid-19 crisis was over, the grant must be applied where it was needed most after consultation with the relevant ministry.
Hon Chombo applauded ICZ for its support over the years whenever there is a disaster.
ICZ has in the past donated funds for the Bolt Cutter Rusape bus accident and the Brooklyn bus disaster in Gwanda among traffic accidents.
“Recently, following the Timboon bus accident along the Chivhu-Murambinda road which claimed 13 lives and was declared a State of Disaster, the Government facilitated the burial of the deceased to the tune of $14 785 375 which the Insurance Council of Zimbabwe later diligently reimbursed to the Government of Zimbabwe,” said Hon Chombo.
She said ICZ also donated fuel and food hampers worth US$70 000 in support of the Red Zone.
Hence, she added, ICZ has always heeded calls to complement Government efforts in cushioning the bereaved families and those that are physically, emotionally and socially burdened due to impact of disasters.
ICZ Public Relations Committee member Mr Wilberforce Machimbidzofa said his organisation will continue to support Government on matters of economic development and on disasters.
