Application for Liquor Licence

To apply for a liquor license in Zimbabwe, you generally need to meet the following requirements:
Under Part 1 of the schedule to the Act we have some of the following types- Extended hours (occasional) liquor licence; Temporary retail liquor licence; Temporary removal liquor licence. Under part 2 of the schedule, we have some of the following; Restaurant (ordinary or special) liquor licence; Camp & Caravan Park liquor licence; Hotel liquor licence and a Wholesale liquor licence. Each type of licence has its own separate requirements.
It is therefore important to be aware of the requirements for the specific type of liquor license you are applying for and to ensure that your premises conforms to these requirements.
The following factors frequently play a significant role in the evaluation of each application:
- It must be shown that the granting of the liquor licence is in the public interest.
- The applicant must be of good character.
- The premises for which the licence is to be obtained must be suitable for the applicant’s intended use. Land use rights and property zoning (whether or not you are prohibited from carrying on certain businesses, for example) are critical.
- The applicant must also show that the granting of the license does not prejudice
- residents of a residential area;
- older persons or the frail;
- school children under the age of 18; and
- congregants of a religious institution located in the vicinity of the proposed premises.
